FAQs

What is coverage?
Coverage is a 3-5 page objective analysis of a screenplay (feature or television) or manuscript that includes basic information such as writer, title, location of story, circa, page count, and other specifics.  Coverage also includes a log line (what the story is about in one sentence),  detailed summary, and comments.

Coverage reports vary from company to company, although all consist of the basic elements.  While smaller companies may provide a simple paragraph about what did or did not work in the script, Dialogue Driven provides "studio/agency level coverage," which is a longer and more detailed analysis  Should anyone ask to see the coverage --  you the writer will be able to use the Dialogue Driven coverage with confidence that it is professional coverage.  Click for an example of Dialogue Driven coverage.

What does it mean if my script receives "Consider," "Recommend," or "Pass"?
Dialogue Driven rates each screenplay or manuscript according to an evaluation on writing ability, story, structure, format and potential audience.

  • "Recommend"means "Yes -- this is an original idea and strong writing with great promise for a movie."  Receiving a "recommend" rating is very difficult.
  • "Consider" means "Maybe -- this script shows potential with a good concept or impressive writing yet needs revisions."
  • "Pass" means "No -- this script needs a lot of work or lacks a compelling story."  If your script receives a "pass," it does not mean that you can't resubmit a revised script or that the "pass" will affect any future submissions.

Do you accept international submissions?
Yes, we do all submissions electronically.  As long as your screenplay is written in English, submitting your screenplay is simple from anywhere.

Do you accept re-submissions?
Yes, once you receive your initial coverage, there is a variety of Dialogue Driven services available to help in revising your script.  All submission requirements stay the same except there is a reduced rate for re-submissions. Re-submission after using the coverage services does not guarantee that a project will eventually receive a "consider" or "recommend." When re-submitting, take time to do a thorough pass on the rewrite, paying careful attention to the structure and character dynamics, etc.

Besides accepting original screenplays and original book manuscripts, do you accept screenplays  based on existing books, plays, short stories that are only writing exercises or must I have the rights to the screenplay adaptation I submit?
Yes, we accept submissions adapted from other material if it is only a writing exercise.  Please clarify on the submission the status of the rights so the consultant can provide the most accurate coverage.

How do I submit my work?
It's easy. Just fill out the contact form and a representative from Dialogue Driven will contact you to help place your order.

In what format should my script or manuscript be?
We prefer your work saved as a .PDF, .RTF, or .FDR (FDR is Final Draft -- the industry-standard scriptwriting program).  Courier 12 point is the correct font style and size.  Submit only the script or manuscript.  Miscellaneous accompaniments such as audio, photos or artwork are not taken into consideration.

How can I protect my ideas from being stolen?
There are no guarantees to protect your ideas from being stolen. Not everyone in this business has a great reputation and there is a chance that someone will steal your idea. Additionally, under copyright law, there is no way to protect an "idea."  You can only protect your specific execution of the idea.  However, most companies would rather pay for an idea than risk being sued for millions for copyright infringement.

Nonetheless, Dialogue Driven highly recommends that all submissions be registered with the Writers Guild of America  and/or with the Library of Congress. Again, these registrations do not guarantee your work is protected from being stolen, yet these registrations do provide proof of your work.
